An electric water pump in my opinion will be more efficient and in tune with the engine's specific cooling needs. Electric pumps will typically flow two to three times as much as a mechanical pump at idle RPM as electric pump delivers a constant flow rate, while mechanical pump scales with engine speed. So, I guess it's a good idea to change mechanical water pump to electric pump for better efficiency.
