Try to find Hall effect sensor and check to see if you can pick up a signal from there.

The Tachometer is a cool feature to have, but I find it a little disturbing while on a long ride. I can feel the engine's reverberation and can shift gears smoothly. I don't rely on a tachometer for shifting, it's very hard to monitor the tachometer and shift gear on traffic.
