How to Do Mini Truck Mechanical to Electric Fuel Pump Conversion

Japanese mini trucks have stood the test of time and become the ultimate lightweight truck. It is no longer a vehicle used only in Japan, but loved across the globe. There is no doubt that these vehicles deliver beyond user expectations. But like any other vehicle out there, these vehicles need to be well taken care of to get you the best results. In this guide, we will focus more into the process of how to do a mechanical to electric fuel pump conversion.

Mechanical VS Electric Fuel Pump

Before delving into how to make a conversion from a mechanical to electric, let us first look into their differences.

Mechanical pumps are usually installed on older vehicles because this was as far as the technology was in those times. Electric fuel pumps are in use today and are seen as an improved version of the mechanical pumps.

Advanced engines that are found in newer vehicles means that you get to experience more power and torque. However, this also means that there is need for a better fuel pumping mechanism in place. An electric pump uses a computerized system to regulate the pumping mechanism whereas the mechanical is plainly manual functionality. It is therefore important to have an electric pump in place to enhance functionality and boost efficiency.

How to Do Mini Truck Mechanical to Electric Fuel Pump Conversion

Here is how to go about changing the mini truck mechanical fuel pump to an electric one.

Step 1

First you need to disconnect the cable terminals on the battery and then go ahead and remove the gas cap from the fuel tank. Then pump the acceleration pedal a few times. This step ensures that there is no pressure in the fuel line.

Step 2

Then, you need to remove the fuel line clamps leading to the fuel pump. Place a can to collect the excess fuel as you pull the hoses off to disconnect. Also, disconnect the carburetor fuel line completely. All the fuel lines need to be disconnected to ensure that the fuel pump is totally disabled.

Step 3

Now, you can remove the mechanical pump and then introduce the new electric fuel pump in place. Be sure that it is well placed somewhere where there is no distractions and away from being hit by debris. Usually, they come with brackets to protect them from such damage.

Step 4

Next, you need to screw everything in place including the electrical wires of the electric fuel pump. For instance the black wire goes to the frame of the vehicle and should be well secured and screwed. You can then run the other wires to the fuse box and correctly connect them as the manual advises.

Step 5

Lastly, but most importantly, start reconnecting the fuel lines one by one as they are supposed to be. follow the fuel line as it was in the old mechanical fuel pump. Everything else should fall into place when you follow the manual that comes with the electric fuel pump.
